Catch Gold Fever

Experience what it was like to be a fortune hunter during Gold Rush days, by following the boot tracks of the prospector who struck gold and gave Juneau its name. Catch “gold fever” by learning how to pan, with expert instruction, in the very same stream and spectacular natural setting where Joe Juneau made his historic find. And discover Juneau’s long and colorful mining heritage for yourself.

A Motherload Adventure Awaits

Be greeted by a prospector/guide in authentic 19th-century dress, who takes you on a historical tour of Juneau including the state capitol. Along the way, he points out key sights and tells tales of a city whose history is paved with gold. Then, turn up the road to Gold Creek and “Last Chance Basin”. This is where Joe Juneau and his partner Richard Harris found riches in 1880. In a beautiful, secluded setting near a waterfall alongside Gold Creek — only accessible under our tour’s special permit — your prospector shows you how gold panning is done. Then, it’s your turn, as you learn how to expertly work the pan with helpful tips and advice. You can choose to pan in the creek, or in the waist-high demonstration trough. Everyone of all ages and those with limited mobility can learn how to pan and capture the full gold-rush experience. You’re guaranteed to find gold! And, all that glitters is yours to keep. Around you are remnants of the original mine buildings of the Alaska-Juneau Mining Company, which at the height of production was the largest operation of its type in the world. Plus, learn about the mining techniques that were used, and more about the quest for gold that is so interwined with the history of Juneau and the entire state of Alaska. Take home a claim certificate, all the gold you find, and an appreciation of what is was like to seek your fortune in the wilds of Alaska more than a century ago.
