Arriving at the lake, it’ll be time to gear up, board your raft and take off on your unforgettable adventure. Your experienced guide will steer you across the serene waters of the lake, maneuvering past the floating icebergs, to the river beyond. The speed of the water and level of the rapids vary depending on the weather, but your highly trained guide will ensure you have a safe, exhilarating experience. You will be rafting a five mile stretch of river from the Mendenhall Lake, in the Tongass National Forest down stream toward Juneau harbor. If you are interested in a scenic, yet adventurous experience, where you can get out into nature and learn about the area, see the glacier, the icebergs, some wildlife and the thrill of going through a short section of rapids while the guide takes complete care of you, then this is the tour for you. If you are interested in a higher level of activity where you will be following the guide’s commands and powering your raft through the troughs of the rapids during the 1 mile of class three rapids, then you will want to ask for a paddle raft when you get to there. We can accommodate you, whatever your activity level preference is.
As your host explains the natural phenomena at work in this scenic valley, you’ll marvel at the spectacular views of the glacier and towering peaks as you float downstream. You’ll want to be on the lookout for wildlife the entire stretch of the river. Birds including arctic terns nest on the shoreline, and eagles, goats, salmon and bears are all common sights. During your travels, you’ll also get to experience the rush of shooting some moderate rapids.
At the end of your fun journey you’ll head to shore to enjoy an Alaska-style snack, enjoy a warm beverage, and have the opportunity to purchase a photo of your rafting experience before re-boarding your motor coach for the short, relaxing ride back to your ship.
