We’ve come a long way since we started in February 2018 with our first vacation rental. Did you know that the box spring is often the culprit to noisy/uncomfortable beds? It’s true.

This was a new vacation rental and we put a new mattress on a box spring we had in storage. We also didn’t have a headboard on it to make matters worse.  The guest was very nice and asked for an air mattress for her stay. We delivered the air mattress, but when we received this video after her stay we were mortified!!

We have upgraded many beds and box springs since then and will do so on an ongoing basis if needed.  The sleep quality of our guests is a serious concern. Guests should be comfortable on vacation!

Other things to consider:

  • How firm of a mattress should I purchase – We decided that a medium to firm mattress with a plush mattress protector/topper is the way to go. The topper provides a level of softness but doesn’t take away from the firm base.

  • Height of the mattress – We have some bedframes that are high. These are the ones that have storage built in, which we need in some smaller areas to fit a queen-sized bed. We provide step stools in these cases to make it easier to climb up into some of those mattresses.

Bed Configuration – Think about using every bed yourself, including extras in common areas, such as pull-out couches. We had a small two-bedroom apartment with a pull-out couch in a ski area.  Since we never actually used the pull out ourselves after setting up the unit with furniture, we were disappointed when the complaint came in that the pullout couch blocked access to the only bathroom – True! We had the unit max out at 6 people, but since moved it to 4-max because it’s unreasonable to expect people to crawl over a bed someone else is sleeping in to access the bathroom in the middle of the night.
